ALLEY HOPPIN! Putting People Back in DC’s Alleys
Outreach
The Washington Alley Project is a public space advocacy project. Our primary avenue for community engagement has been the Alley Hop, a playful self-guided tour of DC alleys.
Alley Hop participants, or ‘Hoppers,’ are armed with ‘low-res virtual reality goggles’ that highlight specific panoptic moments in the alleys overlaid with drawings and collages that help bridge between the alley spaces of past, present, and future.
The Alley Hop!
By inserting our research and community partners (you!) together into physical alley spaces, we hope to create a platform for people to collectively consider the future of the unique spaces that they share. The conversations among Hoppers are the springboard for future interventions and synthesize the needs and desires of the city’s administration, its infrastructure, and its inhabitants.
To date, there have been four Alley Hops, each with a slightly different focus. Some Hops have focused on identifying issues and potential design interventions, while Alley Hop 2.0, featured here, focused on history and drawing out some of the wonderful stories to be found in these interesting urban byways. Read on to learn more about Washington’s bohemian past and once densely-populated alleys!
