Alethia Tanner Park
Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape ArchitectsThe jurors were impressed at how the park maximizes diverse uses of space that bring together many different types of people. Improving residents’ lives in an urban neighborhood that historically suffered from a green space deficit, Alethia Tanner Park exemplifies simple, elegant, and transformational change.
Honor Award in Design Built
The Landscape Architect reimagined a two-acre parcel of formerly industrial land in Washington, DC as a green commons, with boardwalks, movable seating, a modern children’s playground, a wall for art installations, a café, a dog park, and more.
A boardwalk floats above a phytoremediation area that treats site runoff, with interpretive panels describing site ecology and restoration efforts.
Open program features provide community-focused amenities, including a variety of seating options and custom benches to promote relaxation and conversation.
A large, communal lawn houses a permanent screen armature for film screenings, events, and community programs.
