Battery Kemble Overlook

Campion Hruby Landscape Architects

Congratulations to Campion Hruby Landscape Architects for Battery Kemble Overlook in Washington, DC. Jurors praised how the design uses topography to great advantage on a relatively small site, displaying a successful transition from house, to garden, to woodland beyond.

Merit Award in Residential Design

An overgrown lot above Battery Kemble Park was home to a crumbling 1970s contemporary house. Clients wanted a modern house and landscape that would embrace the view of the wooded park below and provide privacy from the houses above. Here we see the house positioned to overlook the park, and how the pool creates a private destination slightly detached from the house.

Stairs, walls, and terraced plantings connect lower lawn with the pool garden.

Masonry walls were designed to be seamless extensions of the house. A custom wood bench with a gas fire pit provides a private space at the end of the pool.

Custom fence details add character and texture to the sequence of walls and terraces descending the slope.
