Frederick Douglass Park on the Tuckahoe

LSG Landscape Architecture

The project beautifully explores the site’s existing landscape. The jurors concluded that the site master plan for this terrific project was compelling and clearly aligned with the identified goals and objectives.

Honor Award in Analysis, Planning, and Urban Design

The three-phase master plan begins by providing for increased park visitation and usage, then expands trails, boat launches, and interpretative spaces, and concludes with construction of a Visitor Center.

The master plan incorporates landscape management practices that maintain the open field appearance of upland areas, creating a setting reminiscent of Douglass’s time.

The proposed Visitor Center is a hybrid of landscape and building, with the site’s meadows extending to a green roof that offers visitors uninterrupted landscape views.

The proposed master plan balances conservation spaces, interpretive spaces, and memorial spaces so visitors can experience the unique, interconnected Tuckahoe  community that shaped Frederick Douglass and ignited his lifelong quest for justice.
