Landscape Architecture Bureau, LLC

Congratulations to Landscape Architecture Bureau, LLC. Jurors appreciated this project’s use of space. They commented in particular on the nature path and mentioned the unique and creative qualities of the detailing.

Merit Award in Built Design

Located in DC’s Shaw and Logan Circle neighborhoods, the project began as a pro-bono collaboration between neighborhood and school.  The landscape architect’s full range of services resulted in a park space that serves both the school and the surrounding neighborhood. Seen here, the outdoor classroom offers a practical, whimsical space for instruction and engagement with environmental and historical site elements.

The school fronts onto S Street where an accessible entry walk threads between areas of native planting that lend the school a distinctive character. A “nature path” opposite this space provides ecological services for local wildlife and opportunities for environmental education for students.

The site celebrates the history of Camp Barker, one of many “contraband camps” that were constructed to house formerly enslaved persons.  The outdoor classroom is located where Abraham Lincoln is said to have attended services with former slaves.

The full modernization project involved coordination among parent and teacher groups as well as with the typical DC regulatory agencies.  The site reclaims a former parking lot for use as active recreation space, shown here.
