Janelia Recreation Area

LSG Landscape Architecture

The project’s carefully preserved woods foster a deep relationship with nature. The judges commended the design as combining a multifaceted play site with an overlook that allows parental supervision while offering considerable scenic interest.

Merit Award in Design Built

The Janelia Research Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Ashburn, VA provides a Live-Work environment for 500 scientists.

Sheltered by a forest stand, and spanning a significant topographic change, the recreation area connects activity zones at two levels, embracing the slope transition between levels.

Preserving existing trees to provide the park with instant shade, scale, and habitat value, LSG enhanced the slope with a grove of river birch and native plantings.

A centrally located and cantilevered overlook offers a gathering spot with physical and visual connections to the site’s recreation areas, with views extending outward to Maryland’s Sugarloaf Mountain.
