North Campus Expansion,
Howard Community College

Ayers Saint Gross

Congratulations to Ayers Saint Gross for their North Campus Expansion at Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland. The jury called this a successful execution of a diverse landscape and remarked upon the rich native palette of the micro bioretention plantings.

Merit Award in Built Design

The 119-acre campus is comprised of a diverse range of landscape types, adding richness and a wealth of opportunities for collegiate activities. The North campus expansion provides an equally diverse set of immersive outdoor spaces, such as an expanded quad and more intimate terraces. Stormwater management was an integral part of the design approach, with micro bioretention gardens providing a transformational feature of the College’s planting palette. A campus once defined by seas of large-scale surface parking and vehicular circulation, now redefined into a vision of sustainability.

The site plan balances legible pathways, courtyards, quads and plazas, and choreographs open spaces and stormwater devices.

Circulation and spaces complement each other with a series of smaller terraces and informal seating.

Site topography led to opportunities for passive study space and collaboration areas.
