A. Morton Thomas and Associates

One of two Honor Awards, our highest category, goes to A. Morton Thomas and Associates for their Oxford Conservation Park in Oxford, MD. Jurors gave this project a big thumbs up, praising its compelling story, achievement on a limited budget, and strong emphasis on ecosystem services. They commented that we as a profession should be doing more work like this.

Honor Award in Social Impact

Landscape Architects led a multidisciplinary design team for this project in Oxford, Maryland, a transformation of 86-acres of farmlands into a resilient park and wetland complex with a focus on costal climate change.

As the park continues its transition from farm, to upland emergent wetland to forested wetland, additional opportunities for nature-based learning, exploration, and recreation will be integrated into the park.

Obligate, facultative, and upland native vegetation were chosen for their ability to thrive in the wetland complex and their ability to withstand occasional brackish inundation. These native plants act as a buffer to slow and absorb runoff and capture pollutants.

The design includes a series of accessible trails, allowing views into the wetland and meadow. Bridges reflect the vernacular agricultural landscape.

Oxford Conservation Park integrates stormwater management, resiliency and community involvement. The project blends landscape architecture and engineering with aesthetics and biomimicry.
