Pennsylvania Avenue West Streetscape

VHB

This very thoughtful project simultaneously promotes inclusivity, community engagement, and sustainability. The jury acclaimed this “great solution for a challenging site and corridor,” providing “great context for an important piece of infrastructure.”

Honor Award in Design Unbuilt

This project focuses on the portion of Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC that stretches westward from the White House to Washington Circle, re-imagining the corridor to support users of diverse transportation modalities while fostering sustainability and an improved quality of life by reclaiming impervious surfaces for plants and trees.

The redesigned corridor is lined with amenities like bike racks, benches, café seating, and sculpture pads to provide visually appealing areas of congregation within a largely linear site.

In addition to shrinking the site’s impervious surface footprint, the design introduces bio-retention cells and pervious pavement treatments to reduce the volume of stormwater pollution entering the city’s sewer system.
