The jurors were impressed at the transformation from previous conditions to the new streetscape. They applauded the design team’s use of Dark Sky lighting fixtures, the addition of sidewalks to promote connectivity and equity, and the project’s design details and material selection.

Merit Award in Design Built

A two-decade-long grassroots-led project revitalized the small, 18th-century town of Hillsboro, restoring the town’s historic district as a prime regional destination in rural Loudoun County, VA.


The project strengthened the community’s sense of pride with streetscape design that fit the community’s historic character, while improving quality of life with new sewer and water lines, undergrounding overhead utilities, and new open spaces throughout the town.


The project restored views of Hillsboro’s rural landscape as it enhanced architectural features that reinforced the Town’s historic character.
