Mutualism: A School for Nature
Matthew Aydin Yashar
Thesis Abstract
This thesis aims to understand how the built environment can shape how we react to and interact with the natural world. It argues that through the built environment we can shape society to live mutually with nature by establishing three key moments of transition: increasing familiarity with nature, living alongside nature, and merging nature into society.
By using a school as a case study building, the thesis explores how these transitions can change how young individuals perceive nature as they grow and learn. The school is also an opportunity to understand how a building can become a "seed" for the development of nature within a city moving forward.
